  1. How To Configure a 3Server with a Keyboard and Monitor
  2.  
  3. The files on this diskette will allow a 3Com 3Server running Microsoft
  4. LAN Manager 2.1 or 2.2 to be reconfigured as a "headed" server (i.e. with a
  5. screen and keyboard), and to switch back and forth between this and the
  6. standard "headless" mode.
  7.  
  8. Using the 3Server with a keyboad and monitor is desireable for trouble
  9. shooting and configuration in cases where remote utilities do not exist. 
  10. Configuring printers with OS/2 LanMan PMPrint Manager provides limited
  11. remote capability.  Printer drivers cannot be installed remotely.  
  12. The RplSetup command is not remoteable either.  With a screen and 
  13. keyboard attached, all PC configuration functionality is available on
  14. the 3Server.  It is recommended that the following procedures be 
  15. performed on a test server for configuration or testing purposes. For
  16. production purposes, the 3Server should be returned to Headless mode
  17. under MS Lan Manager.

  19. Caveats:
  20.  
  21. 1.  This procedure is for 3Servers using Ethernet media.
  22. 2.  The config.sys installed by head.bat is configured default for all
  23.     protocols.
  24. 3.  If the tape drive is required in head mode, unremark this line in
  25.     config.sys:
  26.  
  27.     device = c:\tape.os2...
  28.  
  29. Note:  It is not recommended that you operate the server in workstation
  30. configuration IE: headed mode.  This configuration should only be used by 
  31. a qualified service technician when performing low-level hardware 
  32. troubleshooting and testing.

  37. To prepare the server for headed mode:
  38.  
  39. * Otain a complete tape backup of the server at this time. 
  40.   1) Obtain a console connection to the server using 3C start.
  41.   2) Place the diskette containing 3Server head configuration in the a drive.
  42.     Type:   
  43.         A:>>Install

  45.   3) Stop the server and disconnect the power cord.
  46.   4) Install an 8bit VGA adapter and attach a keyboard to the server.
  47.   5) Configure the server's jumpers for COLOR DISPLAY, KEYBOARD ENABLED, and
  48.      WORKSTATION mode. In a 3S/5xx this means set JP4 jumper C to the IN
  49.      position, JP4 jumper D to the IN position, and JP6 jumper A to the IN
  50.      position. In a 3S/4xx this means set JP600 jumper C to the IN position,
  51.      JP600 jumper D to the IN position, and JP200 to the IN position.
  52.   6) Reconnect the server's power cord and configure the server's base RAM
  53.      to 640K.

  57.     1.  Use Setup /w /f from a console connection.
  58.         Set the video type
  59.         Set the base memory to 640k
  60.     2.  For 3S500 and 3S600 servers run the front panel 
  61.         diagnostics to set the base memory to 640k

  63. To switch modes:
  64.  
  65.   1) Stop the server.
  66.   2) Reboot the server under Maintenance mode.
  67.   3) Establish a 3C console connection to the server.
  68.   4) Change to drive C: and execute C:\HEADLESS\HEAD.BAT (to switch to the
  69.      "headed" mode) or C:\HEADLESS\HEADLESS.BAT (to switch back to the default
  70.      "headless" mode).
  71.   5) Break the 3C console connection and reboot the server in Server mode.
